Almost everyone starts on the South 40. First-year students live in Danforth House, Dardick House, Dauten Hall, Hitzeman Hall, Hurd Hall, Koenig House, Lee Hall, Lien House, Myers Hall, Park House, Rutledge Hall, Shanedling Hall, Thomas Eliot A House, and Umrath House, and most sophomores move a few steps over to Beaumont Hall, Gregg House, Liggett House, Mudd House, Nemerov House, Shepley House, Thomas Eliot B House, Wheeler House, or Zetcher House. Upper-class students head to the suite-style Village House and Lopata House, or into full apartments at Village East Apartments and Millbrook Apartments. Residential Life also manages Greenway Apartments, University Drive Apartments, The Lofts Apartments, and Rosedale Apartments — apartments in the neighborhoods around the Danforth campus, another upper-class option. Whatever the address, everything you need is already on campus. WashU students post mini fridges, futons, storage bins, desk lamps, monitors, bikes, and gently used textbooks every semester — usually for a fraction of retail.

Rooms come furnished, so you're buying around what's already there: an XL twin bed frame and mattress, a three-drawer dresser, a computer desk and chair, and closet space. That means twin XL sheets, not standard twin. South 40 buildings have central air conditioning and heat, which is why window AC units sit on the prohibited list alongside candles, hot plates, toasters, halogen lamps, and water beds. Refrigerators have to stay at 4 cubic feet or smaller, which is why compact fridges and microwaves trade hands here every August and May instead of getting hauled across the country.

For handoffs, stay where campus is busiest: the Danforth University Center, Olin Library, the Sumers Recreation Center, Bear's Den on the South 40, or Brookings Quadrangle. All of them are public, well lit, and a short walk from almost any residence hall.

Timing matters. First-year move-in is August 14, 2026, with returning students arriving August 21, and the days around both are the busiest stretch of the year here, with fridges, rugs, and futons listed and claimed within hours. The fall housing term runs through December 17, 2026, and spring closes May 13, 2027, so the other big wave hits in early May when seniors clear out.
