College Marketplace is the student-only buy and sell app for Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Virginia. Every account is verified with a @vmi.edu email address, so you're only ever trading with other Keydets — not strangers from Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist.
VMI does not do rate-billed dorms. The Corps of Cadets lives in barracks, and barracks is really three connected buildings: Old Barracks, begun in 1851 and still home to the Commandant's Office; New Barracks, occupied by cadets since September 1949 with its main entrance through Marshall Arch; and Third Barracks, completed in 2009 and joined to Lejeune Hall, which holds the VMI Bookstore, the Post Exchange, and the Visitor Center. Rooms are spare by design, so everything you need is already on post. VMI cadets post laptops and monitors, Twin XL sheets, desk supplies, running shoes and PT gear, bikes, and gently used textbooks every semester — usually for a fraction of retail.
Read the rules before you buy anything. Barracks rooms are, in the Institute's own words, sparingly furnished, and the prohibited list is long: microwave ovens, hot pots, heating elements and similar appliances are not allowed, and neither are TVs or other entertainment media. Bedding is Twin XL — the 2026–2027 New Cadet Handbook packing list calls for Twin XL white flat sheets. Computers have to be laptops, since desktops are not permitted; monitors are capped at 32 inches measured diagonally; and wireless routers or range extenders are banned, because rooms are already wired and wireless for the VMI network. New cadets also give up phones, electric razors, and most other electronics until Breakout, which is why so much gear changes hands once the year gets going.
Meet somewhere busy and easy to describe. Crozet Hall at meal times, Preston Library, Lejeune Hall by the PX and bookstore, the Corps Physical Training Facility, Marshall Hall, and the edge of the Parade Ground all work, and none of them require you to explain a room number to a stranger. No shipping labels, no delivery fees, no meeting someone off campus.

Who can use College Marketplace at VMI?
Only students with a verified @vmi.edu email address. Every listing you see was posted by another VMI student, and your listings are only visible to the VMI community.
Is it free to buy and sell at VMI?
Yes. Buying, selling, and messaging are completely free. The only optional cost is a featured listing boost, which puts your item at the top of the VMI feed for $2.99 for 7 days.
How do I pay the other student?
You arrange payment directly with each other — cash, Venmo, Zelle, whatever you both agree on. No money runs through the app, and there are no transaction fees.
Where should I meet to buy or sell on VMI's campus?
Stick to busy, well-lit public spots — the student union, the main library, the rec center, and the dining halls are all easy meeting points between classes. Agree on a specific building before you head over, and meet during daylight hours.
