Where Rams buy and sell
About 80% of VCU's first-year students live on campus. Whether you're in a first-year high-rise at Brandt, Rhoads, Gladding Residence Center, GRC III, or The Honors College, or in upperclass apartments at Ackell, Broad & Belvidere, Cary & Belvidere, Grace & Broad, or West Grace North and South, everything you need is already within a few blocks. VCU students post mini fridges, futons, storage bins, desk lamps, monitors, bikes, and gently used textbooks every semester — usually for a fraction of retail. Students living off campus around the Fan use it too. Same rule applies: verified students only, and the person on the other end is someone you'd pass on the way to class.
Know which halls close for breaks
VCU splits its buildings into two groups, and it changes what you should buy. Brandt, Gladding Residence Center, GRC III, The Honors College, and Rhoads close for fall and winter break — residents must be out by November 21, 2026 for fall break and December 16, 2026 for winter, returning after. Ackell, Broad & Belvidere, Cary & Belvidere, Grace & Broad, West Grace North, and West Grace South stay open through both. If you're in a closing hall, that's two extra moves a year and a reason to buy things you can actually pack down.
Meeting up on an urban campus
VCU sits in the middle of Richmond rather than behind a gate, so pick a campus building rather than a street corner. The University Student Commons, the James Branch Cabell Library, and the Cary Street Gym are all places you're already going between classes. No shipping labels, no delivery fees, no meeting someone across the city off Craigslist.
Textbooks without the bookstore markup
Course materials for the arts, health sciences, engineering, and business run into the hundreds of dollars a semester, and the same editions circulate through campus year after year. Buying from the Ram who took the class last term beats the bookstore buyback spread on both ends — the seller gets more than the buyback price, and the buyer pays less than retail.
The weeks that matter most
Move-in in August and move-out in May are when the marketplace is busiest. For 2026–27, residents must be out within 24 hours of their last final exam or by May 15, 2027, whichever comes first — so the spring selling window is short and front-loaded. If you're selling, post before finals rather than after.
