UVM housing sprawls across Central, Athletic, Redstone, and Trinity campuses, and the marketplace follows it. First-year learning communities fill Mercy Hall and McAuley Hall, Jeanne Mance Hall, Marsh Hall, Austin Hall and Tupper Hall, Christie Hall, Wright Hall and Patterson Hall, Wing Hall and Davis Hall, Mason Hall, Simpson Hall and Hamilton Hall, plus the Wellness Environment in Central Campus Residence Hall. Returning students spread out into Harris Hall and Millis Hall, the Living/Learning Complex, Converse Hall, Redstone Hall, Slade Hall, Coolidge Hall, Wilks Hall, 439 College Street, The Cottages, and the Back Five — Hunt Hall, McCann Hall, Ready Hall, Richardson Hall and Sichel Hall — along with the suites at University Heights North and University Heights South. Because new students must live on campus for their first four semesters, there's a reliable two-year churn of furnishing a room and then unloading it — everything you need is already on campus. UVM students post mini fridges, futons, storage bins, desk lamps, monitors, bikes, and gently used textbooks every semester, usually for a fraction of retail.
Check the rules before you buy anything. Beds are XL twin (36" x 80" x 7.25"), so buy XL sheets and skip the standard twin sets, and the installed safety rails cannot be removed. Each student gets a desk, chair, dresser or wardrobe, and a bed with mattress; rooms include overhead lighting, blinds, an internet jack, and a recycling bin, but no trash can. A personal refrigerator has to be 4.0 cubic feet or less and no taller than 34 inches, and a microwave is capped at 700 watts. Air conditioners are prohibited outright, along with space heaters, candles, toasters and coffee makers, halogen lamps, grills, and e-scooters — so fans and under-bed storage bins are what actually move. Rented MicroFridge units stay in the room at move-out, so don't buy someone's rental.
Meet somewhere central and busy. The Dudley H. Davis Center is the natural first pick, and the David W. Howe Memorial Library, the UVM Bookstore, Patrick Gymnasium, and Gutterson Fieldhouse all work in daylight with people around. No shipping labels, no delivery fees, no meeting someone off campus.
Timing matters: fall 2026 move-in runs August 26-27 for first-years and transfers and August 30 for returners, and spring move-out ends at noon on May 9 — the two windows when listings move fastest.
