University at Buffalo is launching soon — be first to know.

Most first-year students land in the Governors Complex, the four halls named for New York governors — Clinton, Dewey, Lehman and Roosevelt — where nearly 800 students live in mostly double rooms, or in the Ellicott Complex, UB's largest housing complex and the one that stays open to every class year across its six halls: Evans, Fargo, Red Jacket, Richmond, Spaulding and Wilkeson. Sophomores get Greiner Hall to themselves, in doubles where two rooms share a private bathroom. On South Campus, Clement Hall and Goodyear Hall hold suite-style singles and doubles, including areas set aside for architecture students. Upperclass Bulls spread out into apartment living at Creekside Village Apartments, Flickinger Court Apartments, Flint Village Apartments, Hadley Village Apartments and South Lake Village Apartments. Wherever you land, everything you need is already on campus. UB students post mini fridges, futons, storage bins, desk lamps, monitors, bikes, and gently used textbooks every semester, usually for a fraction of retail.

The housing rules decide what's worth buying secondhand here. Every residence hall room comes furnished with a desk, chair, dresser, closet or wardrobe, and an extra-long twin bed with an 80" x 35.5" mattress, so it's Twin XL sheets in the halls and full-size sheets in the apartments. Hall rooms have no air conditioning allowed and no microwaves or cooking appliances, which puts fans and mini fridges in constant demand: refrigerators are capped at 4.5 cubic feet, one per single or double and two per triple or quad. The apartments come the other way around, already air conditioned and furnished with living and dining room furniture, a full kitchen with microwave and dishwasher, and free on-site laundry, which is why apartment residents are the ones unloading kitchen gear each spring. Bed risers are prohibited, though hall beds can be lofted with the desk tucked underneath, and extension cords are out — bring an approved power strip instead.

Meet up somewhere busy and central. The Student Union on North Campus, Lockwood Memorial Library, the Oscar A. Silverman Library, Broadview Arena and Harriman Hall on South Campus are all easy walk-ups between classes: no shipping labels, no delivery fees, no meeting someone off campus.
