College Marketplace is the student-only buy and sell app for University of California San Diego in La Jolla, California. Every account is verified with a @ucsd.edu email address, so you're only ever trading with other Tritons — not strangers from Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist.
UC San Diego sorts its housing by residential college, and that is how students talk about it too. First-years live inside their own college neighborhood: Revelle College, Muir College, Roosevelt College (ERC), Warren College, Seventh College, Eighth College, Sixth College at North Torrey Pines Living Learning Neighborhood, or Marshall College at Ridge Walk Living Learning Neighborhood — each one a cluster of halls and apartments with its own Residence Life office. Transfers and upper-division students head to Pepper Canyon East/Matthews Apartments, Pepper Canyon West, Rita Atkinson Residences, or Pangea Apartments & Residence Halls. Incoming first-year and transfer students get a two-year housing guarantee, so that is two move-ins and two move-outs before most people ever sign an off-campus lease — and everything you need is already on campus. UCSD students post mini fridges, futons, storage bins, desk lamps, monitors, bikes, and gently used textbooks every quarter, usually for a fraction of retail.
Check the rules before you buy. Beds are extra-long twin; HDH tells students to bring "bedding to fit an extra-long twin bed (36" x 80")," so standard twin sheets will not work. Furniture is provided and you are asked not to bring your own — a Pepper Canyon West bedroom, for instance, comes with a twin XL mattress, desk, desk chair, wardrobe, and a small two-drawer dresser. There is no air conditioning in the housing communities; HDH says so outright and suggests a fan for the handful of days above 75 degrees, which is why fans move fast every fall. One small refrigerator is allowed per room, under five cubic feet and UL-approved, and microwaves may be brought. Hot plates, portable heaters, personal air conditioners, extension cords, candles, and incense are not permitted.
When it is time to hand something off, meet somewhere central and busy: Price Center, Library Walk, Geisel Library, RIMAC, Sun God Lawn, or the UC San Diego Bookstore. All of them are a short walk or shuttle hop from the colleges: no shipping labels, no delivery fees, no meeting someone off campus.
