College Marketplace is the student-only buy and sell app for University of California, Riverside in Riverside, California. Every account is verified with a @ucr.edu email address, so you're only ever trading with other Highlanders, not strangers from Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist.

UCR splits its on-campus housing between four first-year residence halls and six campus apartment communities. Incoming freshmen live in the traditional-style halls, Aberdeen-Inverness, Lothian and Dundee, where triple rooms are the most common assignment, or in suite-style Pentland Hills, where four double rooms share bathrooms and a common living area. Newly admitted single freshmen are guaranteed a space for their first year as long as they meet UCR's housing deadlines. After that the apartments open up to continuing and transfer students: Falkirk, Glen Mor, North District, North District 2, The Plaza and Stonehaven. Wherever you land, everything you need is already on campus. UCR students post mini fridges, futons, storage bins, desk lamps, monitors, bikes and gently used textbooks every quarter, usually for a fraction of retail.

Check the rules before you buy. Every bed in the residence halls is a twin extra-long, so buy bedding in that size and nothing else. Hall rooms already include a desk and chair plus a microwave and a mini-refrigerator, and UCR prohibits supplemental personal refrigeration units in its housing facilities, so a second fridge is money wasted. Altering beds, lofting included, is prohibited, which makes loft kits and risers pointless here. Residents may not install air conditioners either; Falkirk, Glen Mor, North District and Stonehaven come with central air and heat, but UCR's residence hall pages list no AC, so fans move fast in September. Open-element appliances such as hot plates, toasters, toaster ovens, indoor grills and immersion coils are banned in bedrooms, and space heaters are only allowed if they are UL-approved with automatic tip-over shutoff. Furniture is the other big swing: Glen Mor, North District and Stonehaven are fully furnished, while Falkirk and The Plaza rent both furnished and unfurnished units, so unfurnished residents are shopping for desks, couches and bed frames every fall.

Meet somewhere busy and central: the Highlander Union Building, the Tomás Rivera Library, the Student Recreation Center, the Bell Tower at Rivera Lawn, or outside the Glasgow Residential Restaurant. No shipping labels, no delivery fees, no meeting someone off campus.
