Where Bruins buy and sell

Almost everyone lives on the Hill, which means the whole community turns over in the same week each September. Whether you're in a classic hall — Dykstra, Hedrick, Rieber, or Sproul — in a deluxe building like De Neve Gardenia, De Neve Holly, Sproul Cove, Sproul Landing, Olympic, or Centennial, in the plazas at De Neve, Sunset Village, Rieber Terrace, Rieber Vista, or Hedrick Summit, or in the Hitch and Saxon suites, everything you need is already a walk up or down the Hill. UCLA students post mini fridges, futons, storage bins, desk lamps, monitors, bikes, and gently used textbooks every quarter — usually for a fraction of retail. Students living off campus in Westwood use it too. Same rule applies: verified students only, and the person on the other end is someone you'd pass on the way to class.

Meeting up on the Hill and on campus

Handoffs happen at landmarks everybody already knows. Ackerman Union, Bruin Plaza, Powell Library, the Young Research Library, and the John Wooden Center are all easy meeting points between classes. If you're both on the Hill, meet at your building's front desk instead of hauling anything down to campus. No shipping labels, no delivery fees, no driving across LA to meet someone off Craigslist.

Textbooks without the bookstore markup

Course materials for engineering, life sciences, economics, and the pre-health tracks run into the hundreds of dollars, and the same editions circulate through campus year after year. Buying from the Bruin who took the class last quarter beats the bookstore buyback spread on both ends — the seller gets more than the buyback price, and the buyer pays less than retail.

The quarters that matter most

UCLA runs on quarters. September move-in and June move-out are the big ones, and because so much of the undergraduate population lives on the Hill, the turnover is concentrated — thousands of rooms emptying and filling in the same few days. If you're selling, post before the rush. If you're buying, that's when the good stuff appears and disappears the same day.
