College Marketplace is the student-only buy and sell app for Southern University and A&M College in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Every account is verified with a @subr.edu email address, so you're only ever trading with other Jaguars — not strangers from Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist.
Southern's residential campus is nine halls plus one apartment complex, and where you land shapes your shopping list. Bethune Hall, William E. Reed Hall and Horace G. White Hall are the most affordable traditional rooms on the housing rate sheet, with Felton G. Grandison Hall (104 men in doubles) and Wallace Lee Bradford Hall (124 students in double rooms with community baths) close behind. Ulysses S. Jones Hall and Camille S. Shade Hall are the newer suite-style buildings — 376 men and 376 women respectively, in doubles with baths or suites that share a bath and a living room — while Samuella V. Totty Hall and Alice A. Boley Hall round out the halls. Upperclassmen head for the University Apartments, four three-story buildings holding 560 students in furnished one-, two- and four-bedroom units with their own kitchens and living rooms. Whichever bed you end up in, everything you need is already on campus. Southern students post mini fridges, futons, storage bins, desk lamps, monitors, bikes, and gently used textbooks every semester — usually for a fraction of retail.
Rooms arrive furnished with a twin or XL twin bed, closet or armoire, desk and chair, and Housing's own packing list tells you to bring linens sized for a Twin XL, so skip the standard twin sets. Cooling is centrally controlled building by building and personal window or portable AC units are not permitted, but bed risers are allowed, which is why risers and under-bed bins move quickly in August. Appliance rules are tight: the packing guide caps refrigerators at 4.5 cubic feet and permits a mini microwave and a small air fryer, while the housing policy manual treats a university-approved MicroFridge as the only cooking appliance allowed in a room. Hot plates, grills, candles and incense, extension cords, and LED strip lights all stay home, along with anything that hangs by nails, tape or putty.
Hand things off somewhere busy and well lit: the Smith-Brown Memorial Union, the John B. Cade Library, the F. G. Clark Activity Center, or the plaza outside A. W. Mumford Stadium. No shipping labels, no delivery fees, no meeting someone off campus.
