College Marketplace is the student-only buy and sell app for South Dakota State University in Brookings, South Dakota. Every account is verified with a @jacks.sdstate.edu email address, so you're only ever trading with other Jackrabbits — not strangers from Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist.
Most first-year Jacks land in the traditional halls: Binnewies Hall, Mathews Hall, Young Hall, Hansen Hall and Waneta Hall, or the renovated Brown Hall and Pierson Hall. The newer buildings include Ben Reifel Hall, Schultz Hall, Honors Hall, Hyde Hall and the three halls of Jackrabbit Village — Abbott Hall, Spencer Hall and Thorne Hall. Suite and apartment style rooms live in Caldwell Hall, Meadows North and Meadows South. SDSU requires students to live on campus for two years after high school graduation unless they qualify for a release, which means thousands of Jackrabbits are furnishing a room, emptying it out and doing it again a year later. Everything you need is already on campus. SDSU students post mini fridges, futons, storage bins, desk lamps, monitors, bikes and gently used textbooks every semester, usually for a fraction of retail.
Rooms come with an extra-long twin mattress (36 by 80 inches), a desk and desk chair, a dresser and a closet, so standard twin sheets are the classic freshman mistake here. Beds in most halls loft, and each hall keeps rubber mallets on hand for adjusting them, but homemade or rented lofts and bed risers are banned outright — and beds in Pierson Hall and the Meadows apartments don't loft at all. Refrigerators cannot exceed 5 cubic feet or 1.5 amps, shared microwaves are capped at 700 watts, and window air conditioners, space heaters, air fryers and extension cords are all prohibited. Caldwell, Meadows North and South and the Jackrabbit Village halls are air conditioned, so a fan is worth grabbing secondhand if you're in an older building.
When it's time to hand something off, meet somewhere busy and lit: the University Student Union, Hilton M. Briggs Library, the Miller Wellness Center, the lawn by the Coughlin Campanile, outside Larson Commons at mealtime, or by Jackrabbit Central in the Union. No shipping labels, no delivery fees, no meeting someone off campus.
