College Marketplace is the student-only buy and sell app for University of South Carolina Upstate in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Every account is verified with a @uscupstate.edu email address, so you're only ever trading with other Spartans, not strangers from Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist.

Campus housing at Upstate is small enough that you'll recognize half the sellers. First-year students live in Magnolia House, the suite-style building with 87 suites, and in Palmetto House, which mixes freshmen and upperclassmen and also holds the Housing and Residential Life office. Upperclassmen move across to Palmetto Villas, the two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartments with full kitchens. Full-time first-year students are required to live on campus unless they qualify for an exemption, so almost everyone starts in a suite and works out what they actually need by October. Whichever building you land in, everything you need is already on campus. USC Upstate students post mini fridges, futons, storage bins, desk lamps, monitors, bikes and gently used textbooks every semester, usually for a fraction of retail.

Check the rules before you buy anything bulky. All three buildings use extra long twin mattresses, so standard twin sheets will not fit. Rooms come with a bed, a desk, two chests of drawers and an armoire, plus a sofa or chair in the shared living area, and university furniture cannot be removed or taken apart. Homemade lofts are out. Commercially sold bed lifts of eight inches or less are fine, rental lofts come from the university's designated vendor, and beds have to keep 36 inches of clearance from the top of the mattress to the ceiling. Every suite and apartment already has a microwave and a common-area refrigerator, and extra microwaves are not allowed, so the personal fridge is where the market is: students new in fall 2025 or later are capped at 1.7 cubic feet, while returning students from fall 2024 or earlier can go up to 4.2. Portable air conditioners, space heaters, candles, halogen bulbs and lithium-ion ride-on devices are all prohibited. Laundry is free for residents.

Meet somewhere busy. The Olin B. Sansbury, Jr. Campus Life Center is the natural handoff point, and the USC Upstate Library, the Spartan Recreation Center inside the Health Education Complex, the G.B. Hodge Center and the Susan Jacobs Arboretum all work between classes. No shipping labels, no delivery fees, no meeting someone off campus.
