College Marketplace is the student-only buy and sell app for Seton Hall University in South Orange, New Jersey. Every account is verified with a @shu.edu email address, so you're only ever trading with other Pirates — not strangers from Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist.

Where Pirates buy and sell

Nearly half of Seton Hall undergraduates live on campus. First-year students are assigned to Aquinas Hall or Boland Hall, sophomores to Xavier Hall through the Sophomore Discovery program, and upperclass students to The Complex — Serra, Neumann, and Cabrini — or the apartments at Turrell Manor and Ora Manor. Pirates post futons, storage bins, desk lamps, monitors, seating, bikes, and gently used textbooks every semester — usually for a fraction of retail. Students living off campus around South Orange Village use it too. Same rule applies: verified students only, and the person on the other end is someone you'd pass on the way to class.

Two things that change what's worth buying here

Every residence hall has air conditioning. Seton Hall includes heat and air conditioning in the room rate, so unlike a lot of schools you don't need to plan around a fan.

Ora Manor is about two miles off campus, in the heart of South Orange Village, with the SHUFLY shuttle running to and from. If you're buying something large and you live there, sort out the logistics before you agree on a price — and if you're the one selling to someone at Ora, a campus handoff is easier for both of you than a shuttle trip with a chair.

Meeting up on campus

Handoffs happen at landmarks everybody already knows. The Bishop Dougherty University Center, Walsh Library, and the Richie Regan Recreation and Athletic Center are all short walks from the residence halls, and campus is compact enough that most handoffs take five minutes. No shipping labels, no delivery fees, no meeting someone off Craigslist.

Textbooks without the bookstore markup

Course materials for business, nursing, and the health sciences run into the hundreds of dollars a semester, and the same editions circulate through campus year after year. Buying from the Pirate who took the class last term beats the bookstore buyback spread on both ends — the seller gets more than the buyback price, and the buyer pays less than retail.
