Where Hawks buy and sell
SJU housing runs from traditional first-year halls to apartments and townhouses. Whether you're a first-year in Villiger or LaFarge, a sophomore in Sourin, Moore, Ashwood, Lannon, Rashford, or Merion Gardens, or in McShain, the Morris Quad Townhouses, Pennbrook, Lancaster Court, Quirk, Tara, Xavier, Sullivan, Saint Albert's, Hogan, or Jordan, everything you need is already on Hawk Hill. Hawks post futons, storage bins, desk lamps, monitors, seating, kitchen gear, bikes, and gently used textbooks every semester — usually for a fraction of retail. Same rule applies: verified students only, and the person on the other end is someone you'd pass on the way to class.
City Avenue splits the campus — plan around it
City Avenue runs straight through Hawk Hill, dividing the Philadelphia side from the Lower Merion side, with a bridge connecting them near McShain. If you're in Villiger on the city side and the seller is in Merion Gardens or McShain, that's a real walk with anything bulky. Agree on a landmark near whichever side is easier rather than meeting in the middle.
Sophomore year changes what you need
SJU's rising-sophomore selection sends students into very different setups: Ashwood is mostly five-person two-bedroom apartments, Lannon and Rashford four-person, Merion Gardens mostly two-person one-bedrooms, while Moore has traditional rooms with private bathrooms and Sourin has single-occupancy floors. Moving from a first-year double into a five-person apartment means needing a couch, a table, and cookware that no residence hall room called for — most of which the class ahead is selling in May.
Meeting up on campus
Handoffs happen at landmarks everybody already knows. The Campion Student Center is the main hub, with the Francis A. Drexel Library, the Post Learning Commons, and Hawks' Landing — home of the bookstore and Starbucks — all close by. No shipping labels, no delivery fees, no meeting someone across Philadelphia off Craigslist.
Textbooks without the bookstore markup
Course materials for the Haub School of Business, the sciences, and pre-health tracks run into the hundreds of dollars a semester, and the same editions circulate through campus year after year. Buying from the Hawk who took the class last term beats the bookstore buyback spread on both ends — the seller gets more than the buyback price, and the buyer pays less than retail.
