With 52,000 students in West Lafayette, somebody is always selling the exact textbook or desk chair you need. The hard part has always been finding them without scrolling a Facebook group full of alumni and bots. Whether you're in Cary Quadrangle, Wiley, Earhart, Hillenbrand, Owen or Tarkington, in McCutcheon, Shreve, Windsor or Meredith, or setting up at Harrison or Third Street Suites, everything you need is already on campus. Purdue students post mini fridges, futons, storage bins, desk lamps, monitors, bikes, and gently used textbooks every semester — usually for a fraction of retail.
Meet in the open and it takes five minutes: the Purdue Memorial Union, the Wilmeth Active Learning Center, Hicks Undergraduate Library, or the Engineering Fountain between classes. No shipping labels, no delivery fees, no meeting someone off campus.
Know the specs before you buy. The standard residence mattress is 36 by 78 inches, which twin XL sheets fit. A portable refrigerator/freezer unit must be UL approved and cannot exceed 4.0 total cubic feet, and portable microwave ovens are capped at 1,000 watts. Candles, incense, electric blankets, extension cords without proper certification, fireworks, grills, halogen lamps, humidifiers, portable heating and air conditioning units, soldering tools and weapons are prohibited, as are air fryers, crockpots, hot plates and toaster ovens. No one is required to live in University housing at Purdue unless they have signed a housing contract for that term.
