Buying & selling at Old Dominion University

Campus details for Old Dominion students.

College Marketplace is the student-only buy and sell app for Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. Every account is verified with a @odu.edu email address, so you're only ever trading with other Monarchs, not strangers from Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist.

ODU groups its housing into four neighborhoods, and knowing which one you're in tells you a lot about what you'll need. The Runte Quad holds Dominion House, England House, France House, Ireland House, Owens House, Scotland House, and Virginia House. Over at Colley Bay you'll find Gresham Complex (Gresham Main and Gresham East), Rogers Complex (Rogers Main and Rogers East), and the small cooperative Foundation House. Whitehurst Hall and Powhatan Apartments sit on the Elizabeth, and University Village Apartments anchors the Monarch Way side of campus. Whitehurst houses the largest freshman population on campus and Rogers is traditionally freshmen too, while Powhatan and the Village skew upperclass. ODU has no on-campus residency requirement, so students move in and out of these buildings constantly and everything you need is already on campus. ODU students post mini fridges, futons, storage bins, desk lamps, monitors, bikes, and gently used textbooks every semester, usually for a fraction of retail.

Rooms come furnished by the university with a bed, mattress, drawer space, a desk and chair, and wardrobe or closet space. Nearly every hall is air-conditioned, and beds in the residence halls are adjustable extra-long twins at 36" x 80", so buy Twin XL sheets rather than regular twin. Whitehurst's doubles have bunkable beds, and because the frames adjust in height, risers and lofting hardware trade well in August. The one big exception is University Village Apartments, where bedrooms have a full-size bed at 54" x 75" and the apartment already comes with a couch, coffee table, dining table and chairs, refrigerator, and microwave. Powhatan units have full kitchens; the traditional halls only have kitchenettes on designated floors, which is why microfridges and small appliances move fast there.

When it's time to hand something off, meet somewhere busy and public. Webb University Center is the natural spot between classes, and Perry Library, the Student Recreation Center, Kaufman Mall, and the shops along Monarch Way all work well in daylight. No shipping labels, no delivery fees, no meeting someone off campus.
