Buying & selling at Northern Illinois
Campus details for Northern Illinois students.
College Marketplace is the student-only buy and sell app for Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, Illinois. Every account is verified with a @students.niu.edu email address, so you're only ever trading with other Huskies — not strangers from Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist.
NIU keeps six on-campus communities, and single freshmen who enroll straight out of high school and don't commute from a parent's home within 50 miles of DeKalb are required to spend a full academic year in them. New students usually land in Stevenson Towers, Grant Towers, Neptune Hall or the Patterson Complex, where single minisuites arranged in clusters of 12 are the most requested rooms on campus. Gilbert Hall is reserved for upper-division students, and Northern View Community is the apartment alternative for upper-division, nontraditional and student-family households. With that much turnover every August and May, everything you need is already on campus. NIU students post storage bins, desk lamps, monitors, bikes, area rugs, and gently used textbooks every semester — usually for a fraction of retail.
Know what the room already includes before you spend. Standard rooms come with a bed, a desk and rolling chair, a dresser or closet, blinds, and a MicroFridge — a combined refrigerator, freezer and microwave shared by two residents. It's the only approved fridge — extra refrigerators and microwaves aren't allowed, so skip the dorm-fridge aisle entirely. Mattresses run 78 to 80 inches long and every hall page recommends Twin XL sheets. Housing does the lofting for you — a junior loft is the default, a low loft is the alternative, and the first request is free while each change after costs $50. Air conditioning is standard in Gilbert, Grant, Patterson, Stevenson and Northern View, but only Neptune East has it, so fans move fast in Neptune North and West. Hot plates, grills, space heaters, halogen lamps, candles, and futons in the standard halls are all prohibited. Northern View apartments arrive unfurnished, which is why couches, tables and dressers change hands there every May.
Trade in daylight and in the open. The Holmes Student Center is the busiest handoff point on campus, with Huskie Books and Gear right inside, and Founders Memorial Library or the Recreation Center work well between classes. No shipping labels, no delivery fees, no off-campus meetups.
New students move in Aug. 19-20, 2026 and returning students Aug. 21-23, so those weeks and the May move-out scramble are when listings move fastest.

Help & FAQ
Common questions from Northern Illinois students.
Who can use College Marketplace at Northern Illinois?
Only students with a verified @niu.edu email address. Every listing you see was posted by another Northern Illinois student, and your listings are only visible to the Northern Illinois community.
Is it free to buy and sell at Northern Illinois?
Yes. Buying, selling, and messaging are completely free. The only optional cost is a featured listing boost, which puts your item at the top of the Northern Illinois feed for $2.99 for 7 days.
How do I pay the other student?
You arrange payment directly with each other — cash, Venmo, Zelle, whatever you both agree on. No money runs through the app, and there are no transaction fees.
Where should I meet to buy or sell on Northern Illinois's campus?
Stick to busy, well-lit public spots — the student union, the main library, the rec center, and the dining halls are all easy meeting points between classes. Agree on a specific building before you head over, and meet during daylight hours.
