Living on campus isn't optional here for the first two years: every new first-time freshman, plus any student classified as a freshman (under 30 credit hours) or sophomore (30 to 59), must live in university housing unless granted an exemption. New students generally land in the corridor halls — Eagleson Residence Hall, Debra Saunders-White Residence Hall, Rush Residence Hall, Chidley North Residence Hall and New Residence Hall II — while Annie Day Shepard Residence Hall and Benjamin S. Ruffin Residence Hall run suite-style rooms around a shared bath and lounge. Returning students chase the apartments: Alston Avenue Apartments, with four single bedrooms, two baths and an in-apartment washer and dryer; Eagle Landing Residence Hall, with three- and four-bedroom units and full kitchens; and the two-double suites in the George Street Residential Complex and Lawson Street Residential Complex. NCCU students post mini fridges, futons, storage bins, desk lamps, monitors, bikes and used textbooks every semester — usually for a fraction of retail.
Read the housing rules before you hand anyone cash. Beds take extra-long twin sheets, so a standard twin set is money wasted. A refrigerator has to be under 3.5 cubic feet and a microwave 800 watts or less, which rules out a lot of hand-me-downs from home. Coffee makers and irons need automatic shut-off, and surge protectors must be rated at least 330 joules — extension cords are banned outright. Air fryers, toaster ovens, deep fryers, space heaters, halogen lamps and LED light strips are prohibited, so don't buy one secondhand hoping it slides through. Everyone on campus also buys a meal plan, which is why bedding, fans, storage and desk gear move faster here than cookware.
When it's time to meet up, stay where it's busy. The Alfonso Elder Student Union is the obvious spot, and the James E. Shepard Memorial Library, the LeRoy T. Walker Physical Education Complex, W.G. Pearson Dining Hall, McDougald-McLendon Arena and O'Kelly-Riddick Stadium all work. No shipping labels, no delivery fees, no meeting someone off campus.
Fall move-in runs August 13-15, 2026, staggered by building, with SOAR students arriving August 12 — that stretch and finals week are when listings move fastest.
