Carolina Housing runs more than three dozen buildings. The First Year Experience halls include Cobb, Craige, Ehringhaus, Everett, Graham, Hinton James, Horton, Koury, Lewis, McClinton, Morrison, and Stacy. Closer to the Old Well and Davis Library sit Old East, Old West, Alderman, Kenan, McIver, Spencer, Grimes, Mangum, Manly, and Ruffin Jr., with Alexander, Avery, Carmichael, Connor, Craige North, Hardin, Joyner, Parker, Taylor, Teague, and Winston filling out the rest of the map. Upperclass students who want a kitchen and a private bedroom head for the Ram Village 1, Ram Village 2, Ram Village 3, and Ram Village 5 apartments. First-year students are required to live on campus, so every August brings a full class furnishing a room from scratch. Everything you need is already on campus — UNC students post mini fridges, futons, storage bins, desk lamps, monitors, bikes, and gently used textbooks every semester, usually for a fraction of retail.
Know what the room already gives you. Carolina Housing provides a twin bed with an XL mattress that is loftable, one dresser, a desk and chair, a closet or wardrobe, window blinds, and internet. Twin XL is the only sheet size worth buying, and lofting kits and risers move well here because the beds are built to go up. You get one small refrigerator per student, capped at 4.5 cubic feet by manufacturer measurement, and a microwave is fine as long as it plugs directly into a wall receptacle. No single item can exceed 1,000 watts and no room can exceed 1,800 watts total, so read the label on a used appliance before money changes hands. Personal air conditioners, halogen bulbs, string lights, hot plates, toaster ovens, deep fryers, ceiling fans, and electric scooters are all on the not-approved list — don't buy one secondhand expecting to keep it.
Meet somewhere public and busy: the Carolina Union, Davis Library, the Student Recreation Center, Top of Lenoir, The Pit, or the Old Well. No shipping labels, no delivery fees, no meeting someone off campus.
Fall 2026 move-in runs August 12 through August 16 by appointment, and that week is the busiest stretch of the year on the marketplace. The other spike comes at the end of spring semester, when everyone tries to unload the same things at once.
