College Marketplace is the student-only buy and sell app for New Jersey Institute of Technology in Newark, New Jersey. Every account is verified with a @njit.edu email address, so you're only ever trading with other Highlanders — not strangers from Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist.

First-year students are placed in Cypress Hall, Redwood Hall or Martinson Hall (Honors), and from sophomore year on the rest of the inventory opens up: Laurel Hall, the Greek Village houses, the apartment-style Maple Hall, and Talbott Apartments over on Bleeker Street. NJIT doesn't require anyone to live on campus, so the residential population turns over constantly, which is exactly why the good stuff keeps circulating. Everything you need is already on campus. NJIT students post mini fridges, storage bins, desk lamps, monitors, bikes, and gently used textbooks every semester — usually for a fraction of retail.

Check the housing rules before you spend real money. Rooms come fully furnished with a bed, desk, dresser and either a closet or a wardrobe depending on the building, and they're air conditioned with Wi-Fi included. Nearly every bed on campus is twin extra-long — the frames measure 86 inches in Cypress, 85 in Laurel, Martinson and the Greek Village houses — so twin XL sheets are the default. The exception is a Maple Hall single, which takes full XL. Lofts are out: the residence contract prohibits lofts and liquid-filled beds entirely. Risers are sold for the twin XL beds in Talbott doubles, which sit about 12 inches off the floor, while Talbott singles have full-size beds that can't be raised at all. Refrigerators cap at 1.7 cubic feet per person and 4.5 cubic feet for the room, and microwaves at 1000 watts, one per room. Maple Hall supplies its own microwave and fridge and residents can't bring extras — Command hooks aren't permitted there either — and Talbott's shared kitchen has both, so no personal units. Hot plates, toaster ovens, halogen lamps and window air conditioners are banned everywhere. First-years and sophomores living on campus are on a required unlimited meal plan, so plan your kitchen purchases around that.

When it's time to hand something off, stay somewhere public and busy. The Campus Center, the Robert W. Van Houten Library, the Joel & Diane Bloom Wellness and Events Center, the Naimoli Family Athletic and Recreational Facility and Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium are all easy to describe to someone you've never met. Trade between classes: no shipping labels, no delivery fees, no meeting someone off campus.
