College Marketplace is the student-only buy and sell app for New York University in New York, New York. Every account is verified with a @nyu.edu email address, so you're only ever trading with other Violets — not strangers from Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist.

NYU housing is scattered across Greenwich Village, the East Village and Downtown Brooklyn rather than one quad, which makes a students-only marketplace more useful, not less. New students start in the traditional-style buildings — Brittany Hall, Founders Hall, Lipton Hall, Rubin Hall, Weinstein Hall and the Paulson Center — plus University Hall, while first-year Tandon students are placed across the river in Othmer Hall and Clark Street. Upper-year students move into the apartment-style halls: Alumni Hall, Broome Street, Carlyle Court, Coral Tower, Gramercy Green, Greenwich Hall, Lafayette Hall, Second Street, Sixth Street, Seventh Street, and Palladium Hall and Third North, which take undergraduates of any year. NYU students post mini fridges, storage bins, desk lamps, monitors, bikes, and gently used textbooks every semester — usually for a fraction of retail.

Check the room rules before you buy. NYU gives each resident a bed, twin mattress, desk, desk chair, drawer space and closet or wardrobe space, and every hall is air-conditioned, so a window unit is both unnecessary and prohibited. Sheets are the classic mistake: NYU tells students to buy extra-long 80-inch twin sheets everywhere except Clark Street, where beds are standard 75-inch twins. Traditional-style halls have no kitchen and require a meal plan; some, including Brittany and Founders, already include a microwave-refrigerator unit shared by each suite, so compare notes with suitemates before three of you buy appliances. Apartment-style halls have kitchens and make the meal plan optional. Personal refrigerators under four cubic feet are fine. Outside furniture is where the rules bite: nothing upholstered or cushioned is allowed, and the only pieces you can bring are a fabric-free desk chair, a non-halogen lamp, and a media stand, bookcase or nightstand under 80 total inches. Toaster ovens, hot plates, candles and plain extension cords are out; a surge-protected power strip is fine.

Once you agree on a price, meet somewhere public. The Kimmel Center for University Life, Elmer Holmes Bobst Library, the Palladium Athletic Facility, the Lipton Dining Hall and the edges of Washington Square Park are easy to find and busy at almost any hour. Hand it over between classes: no shipping labels, no delivery fees, no off-campus meetups.
