First-year Aggies land in the suite-style first-year halls — Piñon Hall, Juniper Hall, Garcia Hall, and Rhodes-Garrett Hamiel Hall — because NMSU requires first-time, full-time undergraduates on the Las Cruces campus to spend their first two semesters in a university residence hall. After that year most students move over to the campus apartments: Chamisa Village on north campus, Cervantes Village and Vista Del Monte on south campus, and Sutherland Village, all of them furnished with living rooms, full kitchens, and private bedrooms. That turnover every August and May is exactly why everything you need is already on campus. New Mexico State students post mini fridges, futons, storage bins, desk lamps, monitors, bikes, and gently used textbooks every semester — usually for a fraction of retail.

Hall rooms already come with a twin extra-long bed and mattress, a desk and desk chair, a closet, storage space, and a recycling bin, so buy sheets in twin XL (35 by 80 inches) and skip the furniture entirely. The apartments are different: most bedrooms there take full-size sheets, and only the efficiency units need XL. Housing caps refrigerators at six cubic feet, and window air conditioners are prohibited everywhere — Chamisa Village has refrigerated air while Cervantes Village and Vista Del Monte run evaporative coolers, so a fan is the smarter buy. Toasters, toaster ovens, air fryers, electric heaters, halogen lamps and open burners are all out in the first-year halls; apartment and family housing residents can keep a toaster or toaster oven, but only in the kitchen.

Meeting up is easy when so much of campus life runs through a few buildings. Hand things off inside Corbett Center Student Union, over lunch at Taos Restaurant on Corbett's first floor, outside Branson Library, or near Pan American Center or Aggie Memorial Stadium on an event night — no shipping labels, no delivery fees, no meeting someone off campus.
