Maryland has 39 residence halls and roughly 9,600 beds, and all of them turn over every August. Whether you're in a North Campus high-rise — Ellicott, Hagerstown, La Plata, Denton, Easton, Elkton, Cambridge, Bel Air, Centreville, Chestertown, Cumberland, Oakland, Pyon-Chen, or Johnson-Whittle — or on South Campus in North Hill and South Hill halls like Anne Arundel, Caroline, Prince Frederick, Harford, Calvert, or Kent, everything you need is already on campus. Terps post mini fridges, futons, storage bins, desk lamps, monitors, bikes, and gently used textbooks every semester — usually for a fraction of retail. Juniors and seniors at South Campus Commons and The Courtyards, and students living around downtown College Park, use it too. Same rule applies: verified students only, and the person on the other end is someone you'd pass on the way to class.
Meeting up on a campus this big
Handoffs happen at landmarks everybody already knows. The Stamp Student Union, McKeldin Library, McKeldin Mall, and the Eppley Recreation Center are all easy meeting points between classes. No shipping labels, no delivery fees, no driving up Route 1 to meet someone off Craigslist.
Textbooks without the bookstore markup
Course materials for engineering, business, computer science, and the sciences run into the hundreds of dollars a semester, and the same editions circulate through campus year after year. Buying from the Terp who took the class last term beats the bookstore buyback spread on both ends — the seller gets more than the buyback price, and the buyer pays less than retail.
The weeks that matter most
Move-in in August and move-out in May are when the marketplace is busiest. Maryland's four-year housing plan also means a big wave of rising juniors moving from the halls out to Commons, Courtyards, and off-campus apartments each spring — furniture that has to go somewhere. If you're selling, post before the rush. If you're buying, that's when the good stuff appears and disappears the same day.
