College Marketplace is the student-only buy and sell app for the University of Maine in Orono, Maine. Every account is verified with a @maine.edu email address, so you're only ever trading with other Black Bears — not strangers from Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist.

UMaine splits its residence halls into two groups, and which one you draw shapes how much you haul home in December. The halls that close for winter and spring break are Androscoggin Hall, Aroostook Hall, Balentine Hall, Colvin Hall, Cumberland Hall, Gannett Hall, Kennebec Hall, Oak Hall and Oxford Hall. The ones that stay open straight through are Hancock Hall, Hart Hall, Knox Hall, Penobscot Hall, Somerset Hall, Stodder Hall and York Hall, along with the suite-style buildings. Upperclass students who want a kitchen and a door of their own head for DTAV (Doris Twitchell Allen Village) and Patch Hall, or the suites in Coburn Hall and Polaris Hall — the four buildings whose residents skip the unlimited meal plan that first- and second-year students otherwise carry. Wherever you land, everything you need is already on campus. UMaine students post mini fridges, futons, storage bins, desk lamps, monitors, bikes and gently used textbooks every semester — usually for a fraction of retail.

Rooms arrive furnished with a bed, desk and chair, dressers, bookshelves and closet space, so the shopping list is short and specific. Beds take Twin XL sheets — 80 inches long, not standard twin. Housing allows one mini fridge of no more than 4.0 cubic feet per room, or a rented MicroChill unit instead. Bed lifts are on the official what-to-bring list; air conditioners are flatly prohibited, which is why fans disappear fast in late August. Also banned: halogen lamps, neon signs, space heaters, hot plates, toaster ovens, heated blankets and two-prong extension cords. Coffee makers and electric kettles are fine as long as they shut themselves off, and laundry is unlimited and free.

Hand-offs are easy here. Meet inside the Memorial Union, at Raymond H. Fogler Library, outside the New Balance Student Recreation Center, by Alfond Arena on a hockey night, or at the University Book Store when you're already returning a textbook: no shipping labels, no delivery fees, no meeting someone off campus.

New students move in Aug. 24, 2026, returning students follow on Aug. 29, and halls close for the year at 7 p.m. on May 7, 2027. Those two windows — plus the December and March break closings — are when the marketplace moves fastest.
