College Marketplace is the student-only buy and sell app for Long Island University in Brookville and Brooklyn, New York. Every account is verified with a @my.liu.edu email address, so you're only ever trading with other Sharks — not strangers from Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist.

LIU houses students on two campuses, and what you need depends on which one you land on. At LIU Post in Brookville, first-year students take the traditional doubles and triples in Kings Hall and Queens Hall. Returning students move into the temperature-controlled Riggs Hall and Brookville Hall, which add super singles, or into Post Hall, home to the Honors College. Upperclass and graduate students at Post get suite singles and doubles in the South Residence Complex. In downtown Brooklyn, the sixteen-story Conolly Hall covers everything from standard rooms to semi-private suites and full apartments, and graduate and upperclass students 21 and over live in the four-, five- and six-bedroom furnished apartments at 490 Fulton. Long Island students post mini fridges, futons, storage bins, desk lamps, monitors, bikes and gently used textbooks every semester — usually for a fraction of retail.

Buy extra-long twin sheets, not standard twin: that is what Residence Life's what-to-bring list specifies. Air conditioning is the thing to plan around, since the rate sheet only lists it in Brookville and Riggs, the South Residence Complex suites, Conolly and 490 Fulton, and personal air conditioners are prohibited everywhere — which is why fans move fast in late August. You may bring one compact refrigerator of five cubic feet and nine amps or smaller, though not into a room that already has a kitchen. Microwaves, hot plates, toasters, halogen lamps, portable heaters, candles and extension cords are all prohibited, so check before you buy. Residence Life suggests splitting the shared stuff with a roommate — a TV, a vacuum, a futon — exactly the sort of thing that turns up secondhand here.

Hand-offs are easy when you never leave campus. Meet inside Hillwood Commons, at the Post Campus Library, outside Pratt Recreation Center, or before a show at Tilles Center for the Performing Arts; in Brooklyn, try the Brooklyn Campus Library or the Brooklyn Athletic Center. No shipping labels, no delivery fees, no meeting someone off campus.

Room selection runs in May and move-in lands in late August — that stretch, and the week after spring finals, is when listings turn over fastest.
