College Marketplace is the student-only buy and sell app for Illinois State University in Normal, Illinois. Every account is verified with a @ilstu.edu email address, so you're only ever trading with other Redbirds — not strangers from Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist.

Illinois State asks students to live in University Housing for their first two years out of high school, so most Redbirds start out in the towers. Watterson Towers rises 28 stories, split into ten houses, with its own dining commons at the base. The Tri-Towers complex — Wright Hall, Haynie Hall, and Wilkins Hall — shares the Marketplace at Linkins. A block away, the two 18-story buildings of Hewett-Manchester, Hewett Hall and Manchester Hall, stay open through university breaks. Sophomores who want more space head to the furnished apartments at Cardinal Court, and the university-owned Fell Avenue and School Street Apartments house upper-class, international, and graduate students. Wherever you land, everything you need is already on campus. Illinois State students post mini fridges, futons, storage bins, desk lamps, monitors, bikes, and gently used textbooks every semester — usually for a fraction of retail.

The housing rules shape a lot of what changes hands here. Beds can be lofted and bunked, but only with University Housing's own loft kits, handed out first-come, first-served during move-in at Manchester 102 and the Linkins basement — bring a two-pound rubber mallet. Cinder blocks are banned and room furniture can't be disassembled or moved out, so shop for things that fit around what's already there. Bedding should be extra-long twin. Refrigerators have to stay under 4.5 cubic feet, 36 inches tall, and 1.5 running amps, and personal microwaves aren't permitted in the halls because Housing supplies them on the floors and in the suites. Cardinal Court works differently: apartments come fully furnished with a real kitchen, mini fridges are prohibited, singles have full-size beds and triples have twin XL.

When it's time to hand something off, stick to the places that are already busy. The Bone Student Center lobby, the entrance to Milner Library, the Student Fitness Center, Redbird Plaza, Watterson Dining Commons, and Marketplace at Linkins are all easy walk-ups with people around. No shipping labels, no delivery fees, no meeting someone off campus.

Listings pile up around fall move-in, which starts Tuesday, August 11, 2026 — that first week is when futons, fans, and shelving move fastest — and again during the spring move-out rush, when everyone would rather sell a fridge than haul it home.
