Mānoa's on-campus housing is spread across the mauka side of campus. First-year students cluster in the four Hale Aloha towers — Hale Aloha Lehua, Hale Aloha ʻIlima, Hale Aloha Mokihana, and Hale Aloha Lokelani — while Johnson Hall, Frear Hall, Gateway House, Hale Kahawai, Hale Laulima, and Hale Ānuenue house a broader mix of students in doubles, triples, singles, and suite-style rooms. Students who want a more independent setup move into the towers and low-rise apartments at Hale Wainani. Whichever building you land in, everything you need is already on campus. UH Mānoa students post futons, storage bins, desk lamps, fans, monitors, bikes, beach gear, and gently used textbooks every semester — usually for a fraction of retail.
A few housing rules shape what's actually worth buying here. Rooms come furnished with an extra-long twin bed, desk and chair, closet or wardrobe, dresser, and shelves, so bring Twin XL linens — the mattresses run 38 by 80 inches. Every residence hall room now includes a university-supplied MicroFridge unit, and personal refrigerators and microwaves are no longer allowed in the halls; Hale Wainani apartments have full kitchens instead, where one microwave per apartment is permitted. Most buildings are not air conditioned — only Frear Hall and Hale Ānuenue have AC in the rooms — which is why fans move fast on the marketplace. Personal lofts, waterbeds, extension cords, and non-university furniture are all prohibited, and Hale Kahawai, Hale Laulima, Johnson Hall, and Hale Ānuenue have no elevators, so think twice before buying something heavy.
Meet up somewhere busy and central. Campus Center is the obvious choice, and Hamilton Library, Sinclair Library, the Warrior Recreation Center, and the UH Mānoa Bookstore all work just as well between classes. No shipping labels, no delivery fees, no meeting someone off campus.
