College Marketplace is the student-only buy and sell app for Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, Michigan. Every account is verified with an @emich.edu email address, so you're only ever trading with other Eagles — not strangers from Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist.
First-year students are required to live on campus unless they're commuting from a primary guardian's permanent address within 50 miles, so most of the freshman class lands in Phelps Hall, Sellers Hall, Downing Hall, Walton Hall, Putnam Hall, or Wise Hall. Returning, transfer and commuter students move over to the apartment side of campus: The Village, Cornell Courts, 601 West Forest, Lakeview Apartments, and Westview Apartments. Between the halls and the apartments, everything you need is already on campus. Eastern Michigan students post mini fridges, futons, storage bins, desk lamps, monitors, bikes, and gently used textbooks every semester — usually for a fraction of retail.
Check the building before you buy anyone's bedding, because EMU is not uniform: the residence halls, The Village and 601 West Forest use Twin XL, while Lakeview, Westview and Cornell Courts have full beds. The five renovated halls — Downing, Putnam, Walton, Phelps and Sellers — have central air conditioning, and personal window AC units are only permitted at Cornell Courts and 601 West Forest, capped at 10,000 BTU and installed by maintenance. Mini fridges can't exceed 4 cubic feet or 115V. Personally built lofts, cinder blocks and bed risers are all prohibited, but hall Twin XL beds can be raised or bunked using the notches in the bed posts, with the metal pins available at the front desk. Downing beds arrive pre-lofted and can't be unlofted or bunked, Wise and The Village offer loft kits through a work order, and lofting is not allowed in the other buildings. Halogen lamps, extension cords and personal wireless routers are out as well, so plan on a surge protector.
When it's time to hand something off, stay somewhere busy and central. The Student Center, Halle Library, Rec/IM, and The Commons all work well: they're public, well lit, and a short walk from almost any room assignment. No shipping labels, no delivery fees, no meeting someone off campus.
