Buying & selling at Davidson College

Campus details for Davidson College students.

College Marketplace is the student-only buy and sell app for Davidson College in Davidson, North Carolina. Every account is verified with a @davidson.edu email address, so you're only ever trading with other Wildcats — not strangers from Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist.

First-year Wildcats land in Belk Hall, Little Hall, Richardson Hall, or Watts Hall. After that, the housing lottery opens up Sentelle Hall, Cannon Hall, Chidsey Hall, Duke Hall, and Tomlinson Hall, plus the singles and doubles in Akers Hall, Irwin Hall, and Knox Hall on the northwest side of campus, and the senior apartments at Martin Court Apartments. Davidson requires all currently enrolled students to live in college housing — off-campus permission is limited to rising seniors — which means nearly the entire student body is furnishing a room here every August, and everything you need is already on campus. Davidson students post mini fridges, futons, storage bins, desk lamps, monitors, bikes, and gently used textbooks every semester — usually for a fraction of retail.

The college furnishes each resident with a bed and mattress, a dresser, a closet or wardrobe, a desk, and a desk chair, so what people actually shop for is everything else. Residence Life caps resident-owned refrigerators at 4.2 cubic feet (2 amps, 120 volts), and they have to plug directly into the wall rather than into an extension cord. Microwaves in the residence halls can't exceed 700 watts, though Martin Court apartments allow units from 700 to 1,100 watts. Martin Court also comes with a couch, a dining table, and dining seating already in place, so apartment residents tend to be buying kitchen gear instead of furniture. Homemade lofts are prohibited, so check any secondhand bed setup against the policy before you hand over cash.

Meeting up is a walk, not a drive. Trade in the Alvarez College Union between classes, at the front steps of E.H. Little Library, outside Vail Commons around a meal, at Baker Sports Complex after a workout, or on Main Street by the Davidson College Store. All of it is busy, well-lit, and a few minutes from any hall — no shipping labels, no delivery fees, no meeting someone off campus.
