Dartmouth sorts undergraduate housing into six House Communities, and students keep their house all four years. Living on campus is required first year, and sophomores who apply on time are guaranteed a room, so first-years fill halls like Bissell, Cohen, Gile, Andres, Morton, Zimmerman, Berry, Bildner, Rauner, Brown, Little, Mid Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Topliff, French, Judge, and Russell Sage. Upperclass students spread out into Streeter, Lord, McCulloch, Hitchcock, North Massachusetts, South Massachusetts, Byrne II, Goldstein, Thomas, Richardson, Wheeler, The Lodge, Butterfield, Fahey, McLane, and the all-house Ripley, Woodward, and Smith. For 2026–27 the renovated Fayerweather Hall and the new Russo Hall apartments both come online, joining Maxwell Apartments, Channing Cox Apartments, Ledyard Apartments, and North Park Apartments. With roughly nine in ten undergrads on campus, Dartmouth students post futons, storage bins, desk lamps, monitors, bikes, and gently used textbooks every term — usually for a fraction of retail.

Rooms already come with a bed frame and mattress, a desk and desk chair, a dresser, a bookcase, and a closet or wardrobe, so the resale market here is everything else. Mattresses are extra-long twin (36" x 80" x 6"), so ordinary twin sheets will not fit and XL bedding sells fast in September. Two rules shape what is worth buying: lofts of any kind are banned at the request of the Hanover Fire Department, and cinder blocks are prohibited in every Dartmouth residence, so skip the risers — the frames adjust up to 32 inches on their own. Starting Fall 2026 the College supplies a MicroFridge in every room, which puts personal mini fridges and standalone microwaves out of bounds. Air conditioners, space heaters, hot plates, and instant pots are prohibited too.

Hand things off somewhere public and busy. Collis Center for Student Involvement is the crossroads of campus and stays open late, Baker-Berry Library is the easy daytime option, Class of 1953 Commons works around meal times, the Green is perfect on a clear afternoon, and Alumni Gym or the Hopkins Center for the Arts cover the rest. All of them sit minutes from every House Community — no shipping labels, no delivery fees, no meeting someone off campus.
