College Marketplace is the student-only buy and sell app for Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Every account is verified with an @andrew.cmu.edu email address, so you're only ever trading with other Tartans — not strangers from Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist.
New first-year students at CMU are required to live in campus housing for one full academic year, so almost everyone starts out in the same handful of buildings: Donner House, Hamerschlag House, Scobell House, Stever House, Boss House, McGill House, Henderson House, Welch House, Mudge House, Morewood Gardens, Morewood E-Tower, the Maggie Mo First-Year Houses, Clyde House and Residence on Fifth. Returning Tartans move into West Wing, Resnik House, Fifth & Clyde Residence Hall and Margaret Morrison Apartments, or into the apartment-style housing at Fairfax Apartments, Neville Apartments, Fifth Neville Apartments, Forbes Beeler Apartments, Woodlawn Apartments, Roselawn Houses and The Highlands Apartments. Between the Hill, Morewood Avenue and the Fifth Avenue buildings, everything you need is already on campus. Carnegie Mellon students post mini fridges, futons, storage bins, desk lamps, monitors, bikes and gently used textbooks every semester — usually for a fraction of retail.
Rooms come furnished with a bed, desk and chair, a dresser, a closet or wardrobe and window coverings, so the shopping list is mostly the soft stuff. Mattresses are extra-long twins at 39" x 80", which is why used sheet sets move fast here. Housing provides air conditioning in most buildings, but not in Mudge House, Morewood E-Tower or Donner House, and personal air conditioners are not allowed — box fans get resold every August. Bed lofts are prohibited, so skip the loft kit. Mini fridges must stay under about 4.5 cubic feet and run on standard 110/120 VAC, one per student, and microwaves have to be compact and under 700 watts. Toasters, hot plates, space heaters and halogen lamps are all banned, so check before you buy someone's kitchen setup.
Meet up somewhere busy and central. The Jared L. Cohon University Center is the obvious first choice, and Hunt Library, Sorrells Library, the University Store and The Fence all work just as well in daylight. No shipping labels, no delivery fees, no meeting someone off campus.
Timing matters too: first-year move-in is Saturday, August 15, 2026, with upper-class move-in running August 19 through 23, and those weeks are when listings turn over fastest.
