Housing at UCSB splits between the residence halls and the university's own undergraduate apartments. Anacapa Hall, San Miguel Hall, San Nicolas Hall, San Rafael Hall, Santa Catalina Hall, Santa Cruz Hall, and the seventeen-building Manzanita Village carry most of the first- and second-year population, while El Dorado Apartments, San Joaquin Villages, Santa Ynez Apartments, Sierra Madre Villages, and Westgate Apartments pick up upperclass students who want a kitchen and a lease-style setup. Whichever side of campus you land on, everything you need is already on campus. UCSB students post mini fridges, futons, storage bins, desk lamps, monitors, bikes, and gently used textbooks every semester — usually for a fraction of retail.
Worth knowing before you buy anything. Residence hall rooms arrive furnished with a bed, desk, chair, dresser, mirror, towel bar, wastebasket, and drapes, and the mattresses are Twin XL (39" x 80"), so ordinary twin sheets will not fit. Refrigerators are allowed up to 4.5 cubic feet. Microwaves are not: Housing prohibits cooking equipment of any kind in student rooms, including toaster ovens, grills, hot plates, coffee makers, toasters, and rice cookers, and points residents to the kitchenettes in each hall instead. Waterbeds, pets, and certain lamps are also out. That combination is exactly why used mini fridges and Twin XL bedding move so fast here, and why a secondhand dorm microwave is a bad buy unless you're headed to the apartments.
Meet up somewhere busy and central. The University Center (UCen), Davidson Library, the Recreation Center, the base of Storke Tower, The Arbor, and the De La Guerra Dining Commons are all high-traffic, well-lit, and a short bike ride from any hall or apartment — no shipping labels, no delivery fees, no meeting someone off campus.
Fall residence hall move-in runs September 18–20, 2026. That window and the end of spring quarter are when listings pile up fastest, so check early and post early.
