Davis housing splits into three residence hall areas, and most students still identify with the one they started in. Segundo, on the northwest corner of central campus, covers Alder Hall, Bixby Hall, Gilmore Hall, Malcolm Hall, Miller Hall, Regan Hall, Ryerson Hall and Thompson Hall. Tercero, on the southwest side, is Campbell Hall, Kearney Hall, Laben Hall, Potter Hall and Wall Hall. Cuarto, a block northwest of the core campus, is Shasta Hall, Tahoe Hall and Yosemite Hall. Transfer and continuing undergraduates move on to The Green at West Village, the university's own apartment community west of campus. Between the halls and the apartments, everything you need is already on campus. UC Davis students post futons, storage bins, desk lamps, monitors, bikes, and gently used textbooks every quarter — usually for a fraction of retail.
Every hall room arrives furnished: an extra-long twin bed measuring 36 by 80 inches, a desk and chair, a desk lamp, a dresser or built-in chest of drawers, a closet or wardrobe, and a shared MicroFridge. That last piece matters. You can't keep an extra refrigerator or microwave in a residence hall room, so the fridge-and-microwave market at Davis is really an apartment market, where the cap is one 4.5 cubic foot refrigerator and one 800-watt microwave per bedroom. Beds can be bunked or lofted, but only Student Housing does the reconfiguring and requests go in during the first two weeks of the quarter; risers, spacers and personal hardware are not allowed, and guardrails stay on. Cuarto residents get full control of heating and cooling year-round, while Segundo and Tercero thermostats only move within a set range, which is why fans change hands quickly in early fall and late spring. Air fryers, toasters, hot plates and rice cookers are out in the halls, and candles and open flames are banned everywhere.
Hand things off somewhere you already walk past. The Memorial Union, the Peter J. Shields Library, the Activities and Recreation Center, The Quad, Silo Market and the Segundo Dining Commons are all busy, public and easy to bike to — no shipping labels, no delivery fees, no meeting someone off campus.
