Where Terriers buy and sell
BU runs one of the largest private university housing systems in the country, and it guarantees housing all four years — so the community turns over constantly without anyone leaving. Whether you're in Warren Towers on Central Campus, in West Campus at Claflin, Sleeper, or Rich, in 610 Beacon Street, Kilachand Hall, Danielsen Hall, The Towers, 575 or 1019 Commonwealth Avenue, in the Bay State Road brownstones, out in Student Village I or II, or on South Campus or the Fenway Campus, everything you need is already somewhere along Comm Ave. Terriers post mini fridges, futons, storage bins, desk lamps, monitors, bikes, and gently used textbooks every semester — usually for a fraction of retail. Same rule applies: verified students only, and the person on the other end is someone you'd pass on the way to class.
A note on names
BU refers to a lot of its residences by street address rather than a hall name, which trips up searches. 610 Beacon Street is the building many students still call Myles Standish Hall. 575 Comm Ave is the one everyone calls HoJo. 10 Buick Street and 33 Harry Agganis Way are StuVi 1 and StuVi 2. If you're searching for one name and finding nothing, try the other.
Air conditioning is worth checking
BU's residences aren't uniform. 610 Beacon, Kilachand, 1019 Comm Ave, 575 Comm Ave, and the Student Village buildings have air conditioning. Warren Towers, West Campus, The Towers, the Bay State Road brownstones, and Danielsen don't. If you're moving into one of the second group, a fan is the first thing to buy in August — and worth listing rather than tossing in May.
Meeting up along Comm Ave
BU's campus runs in a line along Commonwealth Avenue rather than around a quad, so the useful question is which end you're both nearer. The George Sherman Union and Mugar Memorial Library sit in the middle of Central Campus, and FitRec covers the West Campus end. The BU Shuttle runs the length of it. No shipping labels, no delivery fees, no meeting someone across Boston off Craigslist.
Textbooks without the bookstore markup
Course materials for engineering, business, communications, and the health sciences run into the hundreds of dollars a semester, and the same editions circulate through campus year after year. Buying from the Terrier who took the class last term beats the bookstore buyback spread on both ends — the seller gets more than the buyback price, and the buyer pays less than retail.
