College Marketplace is the student-only buy and sell app for American University in Washington, D.C. Every account is verified with a @american.edu email address, so you're only ever trading with other Eagles — not strangers from Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist.
AU has a two-year residency requirement, so most underclassmen are living on campus. Whether you're moving into Anderson, Centennial, Hughes, Letts, or Roper as a first-year, settling into Clark or Duber Hall, or setting up an apartment at The Frequency in Tenleytown, everything you need is already here. AU students post mini fridges, futons, storage bins, desk lamps, monitors, bikes, and gently used textbooks every semester — usually for a fraction of retail.
Handoffs happen at landmarks everybody already knows. Mary Graydon Center is the obvious one — it's where you checked in on move-in day. No shipping labels, no delivery fees, no meeting someone off campus.
Move-in for fall 2026 starts Saturday, August 22, which is when the marketplace is busiest. Students clearing out and students arriving are on campus in the same week. If you're selling, post before the rush. If you're buying, that's when the good stuff appears and disappears the same day.
Know the specs before you buy. AU mattresses are twin-sized and measure 80 inches long, so standard twin sheets fit — students taller than 6 feet 3 inches can request an 84-inch XL bed and mattress through the AU Housing Portal. A mini fridge is allowed up to 4.5 cubic feet, but a microwave is only permitted as part of a MicroFridge unit rented through Breez, so a loose one bought secondhand is money wasted. Weapons, fireworks, halogen lamps, all candles and incense, grills including George Foreman, and open-coil appliances such as toasters, hot plates and space heaters are prohibited. AU requires students to live in campus housing their first and second year.

Is it free to buy and sell at American?
Yes. Buying, selling, and messaging are completely free. The only optional cost is a featured listing boost, which puts your item at the top of the AU feed for $2.99 for 7 days.
How do I pay the other student?
You arrange payment directly with each other — cash, Venmo, Zelle, whatever you both agree on. No money runs through the app, and there are no transaction fees.
Where should I meet to buy or sell on AU's campus?
Stick to busy, well-lit public spots. Popular AU handoff points are the Mary Graydon Student Center, the Terrace Dining Room, and Bender Arena. Meet during daylight hours and bring a friend if you are unsure.
